Weber State hired one of its own to lead the softball program, Salt Lake Community College softball coach Mary Kay Amicone.

Amicone, a four-time coach of the year at SLCC, led the Bruins to three consecutive NJCAA championship games, including 2013. Amicone was 433-99-2 in nine seasons at SLCC, 330-57 in conference games.

Amicone, who also coached at Utah and led BYU to a Mountain West Conference championship, replaces Tina Johnson, who restarted the program four years ago following a 27-year absence. The Wildcats were 10-38 in 2013.

"There are so many great things in place here and I really appreciate this opportunity to continue my coaching career here at Weber State where I began my playing career," Amicone said.

Amicone played the outfield for two seasons at Weber State. When the school dropped the program, she transferred to Utah.

"She will bring a high level of experience to Weber State and will be a great fit for our athletic department," WSU athletic director Jerry Bovee said.
