A motorcyclist was in critical condition Tuesday after he was hit from behind by a car on Interstate 15 near Lehi, the Utah Highway Patrol reported.

The man on the motorcycle was knocked to the pavement by the 1:20 p.m. collision. He was wearing a helmet but suffered critical injuries.

The northbound freeway lanes were closed for a time so a medical helicopter could land to take the victim to a hospital in Provo, the UHP reported.

The accident occurred at mile post 282, which is about two miles north of Lehi.

Traffic was heavy and congested as the driver of a Nissan Maxima changed lanes, passed another vehicle and then quickly moved back into the lane behind the motorcycle, the UHP reported. But at that moment, the flow of traffic was slowing. The driver of the Nissan braked, but hit the back of the motorcycle.
