Copper wire stolen from Cottonwood Heights light poles

Police are investigating the theft of 400 feet of copper wire from five light poles in Cottonwood Heights early Monday.

The five 40-foot poles were in the parking lots of Famous Dave's restaurant and the Union Park commercial building near Fort Union Boulevard and 1200 East, said Cottonwood Heights police Sgt. Dave Broadhead. Each pole contained 80 feet of copper wire, which was removed through access plates at the bottoms of the poles, Broadhead said. Investigators do not know whether the wire was stolen by a lone thief or by a group of people. The poles are near busy streets.

"It will take thousands of dollars to get the poles rewired and working again," Broadhead said.

Police are urging metal recyclers to report any large or otherwise suspicious drop-offs of copper wire. Anyone else with information may call police at 801-944-7100.
