Liverpool, England • Roberto Martinez has been hired as the new manager of Everton after four years at Wigan that ended with the club's relegation from the English Premier League last month.

The 39-year-old Spaniard signed a four-year deal Wednesday as the replacement for David Moyes, who is taking over from Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

Martinez is Everton's first new manager in 11 years.

His stock remained high despite failing to keep Wigan in England's top division for the fourth straight season. He guided the northwest team to its first major trophy thanks to a surprise 1-0 win over Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May and was popular for his style of play.
