Salt Lake City motorcycle cop injured by freeway debris

A Salt Lake City motorcycle officer was at home recovering Thursday, the day after he was injured by flying debris while on a training ride on Interstate 15.

Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson said the injured policeman was one of 22 motorcycle officers riding southbound on I-15 near Kaysville about 2:20 p.m. Wednesday. The unit was traveling in the freeway's HOV (high occupancy vehicle) when a large piece of a metal refrigeration unit was spotted in their path.

While the lead riders managed to avoid the debris, another ride struck the metal, fragments of which they flew into a following officer's motorcycle, causing him to tumble to the pavement.

The officer, whose identity was not released, was transported to an unspecified area hospital by ambulance.

SLCPD Det. Dennis McGowan said Thursday that the officer who was injured was a 15-year police veteran with three years experience as a motorcycle officer.
