Right after pulling out of a downtown fast food joint, I came to a stop light. On the corner was a panhandler.

I rolled down my window and handed over the food I had just bought. I was astonished when he refused it and said that cash would be more convenient.

Without another word, I placed the hot meal in his hands and drove off. As I did, it hit me; there are two types of people in this world: Those who would roll down their window and pull out their wallet and those who would turn a blind eye to one in need.

If you encounter a panhandler who's convincing enough with their empathetic plea for support, give them food or the gift card in the back of your wallet. Hand over anything but money and you'll see that quick cash is all they're after.

At least you'll know that you are one of those who rolls down their window.
