MLB Draft: Utah brothers drafted by Mariners

The third day of the Major League Draft was a long one to wait through for the Snyder brothers. After a few workouts together in Seattle and California, they had hopes of being drafted higher.

But in the 34th round — after more than 1,000 players had gone ahead of them — they got some good news: The Seattle Mariners took Taylor Snyder, a shortstop from Salem Hills High School.

Sixty picks later, older brother JC Snyder was selected by the Mariners as well.

"It was a pretty cool moment," Taylor Snyder said. "The thought that we could be playing pro baseball together this summer is pretty awesome."

That doesn't mean necessarily that's what the brothers will do. Taylor might still go play at Salt Lake Community College, where his brother has been playing for the last two seasons. JC is prepared to go to BYU if he doesn't want to go pro now.

But still, the shared experience was one to remember. The brothers spent the day in an Ogden hotel room watching the draft as Taylor was preparing to play in the high school All-Star game. They got calls from their parents congratulating them.

Their father, Cory Snyder, was a longtime player in the major leagues. The brothers will probably have a few more talks with him before they decide what to do.

Their pro careers may not begin now, but at least sharing the time on the road together was something they'll not soon forget.

"Being picked by the same team was the coolest part," JC said. "It motivates you, and hopefully some day soon we can play together."

Several other Utah-based players were picked on the third and final day of the draft, including three players from BYU.

Adam Law, an infielder and the son of former BYU coach Vance Law, was taken by the L.A. Dodgers in the 12th round. BYU outfielder Jaycob Brugman (Oakland Athletics, 17th round) and pitcher Adam Miller (Arizona Diamondbacks, 20th round) didn't have to wait much longer.

In all, four BYU players were selected in the draft after outfielder Jacob Hannemann went in the third round to the Chicago Cubs.

Trey Nielsen, an infielder and pitcher with the Utes, was selected in the 30th round by the St. Louis Cardinals, the second time he's been drafted.

Former Northridge and SLCC outfielder Dominique Taylor was taken in the 15th round with the No. 444 pick by the Kansas City Royals. He spent last season at UC-Irvine.
