Certifiable gun 'experts'

This is an archived article that was published on sltrib.com in 2013, and information in the article may be outdated. It is provided only for personal research purposes and may not be reprinted.

Let's see now:

• A police chief shoots himself during a gun-safety training event overseen by two firearms instructors ("N. Ogden police chief recovering from accidental self-inflicted gunshot," Tribune, June 7).

• A court orders Utah's premiere concealed weapons instructor to surrender his weapons due to a stalking injunction and other related spousal harassment charges ("Gun lobbyist Aposhian ordered to give up firearms," Tribune, June 4).

• My gun-nut file includes several other gun-related accidents that have occurred during training sessions in recent years.

Who monitors these so-called firearms and concealed weapons instructors for competency and mental stability? Who certifies them? "Crazy" Dell Schanze?
