Santa Clara, Calif. • Construction on the new San Francisco 49ers stadium has been stopped after a worker was killed in an elevator shaft.

The unidentified man died around 6:50 a.m. Tuesday. Construction officials say he was on the lowest level of the stadium edifice when it happened.

State workplace safety officials are expected to investigate.

Construction on the $1.3 billion Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara began in April. The 49ers are expected to move there from Candlestick Park for the 2014 season.

The stadium has been selected to host the 2016 Super Bowl.
