West Valley City man who aimed gun at cop faces porn charge

A man shot in May during a confrontation with police in the lobby of the West Valley City Police Department has been indicted by a federal grand jury on a child pornography charge.

James Ramsey Kammeyer Jr., 39, faces one count of knowingly receiving and distributing child pornography between March 1 and March 30, according to the indictment filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court.

Kammeyer, a registered sex offender, walked into the city's police building on April 29 and approached a civilian clerk and uniformed officer, who were seated behind protective glass at the front desk, and asked to speak with a detective. As the detective opened a door to the lobby to meet with Kammeyer, he noticed him fidgeting with something and asked Kammeyer to take his hands out of his pockets. Kammeyer then pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the detective, who closed the door and yelled "gun." The detective radioed for help as he commanded Kammeyer to drop the weapon. Instead, Kammeyer pointed the gun at the receptionist.

Another officer opened a door from a stairwell into the lobby and fired on Kammeyer, wounding him in the arm. Kammeyer was taken to a local hospital for treatment and then booked into the Salt Lake County jail. Investigators said Kammeyer may have been trying to commit suicide by cop; in December police responded to a custody dispute involving Kammeyer and took him to a mental hospital for treatment after he threatened to kill himself.

Kammeyer, of West Valley City, was charged in 3rd District Court with threat of terrorism, three counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a restricted person. He also faces criminal mischief and domestic violence charges in West Jordan Justice Court stemming from an incident the night before the altercation at the police department. Kammeyer has pleaded not guilty to those charges.

In 1999, Kammeyer served 120 days in jail, was required to register as a sex offender and was placed on probation for three years after pleading guilty to sexual abuse of a child. His probation was revoked in 2002 and he was placed on an additional three years' probation, ordered to complete sex offender treatment and restricted from using the Internet. Kammeyer completed that probation in 2004.
