Bachauer piano festival features competition medalists

The 2013 Gina Bachauer International Piano Festival take place this week with performances by medalists from recent junior, young artist and artist competitions.

Top medalists will perform each night at 7:30 in the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in downtown Salt Lake City.

Here's the schedule:

Wednesday, June 26 • Tony Yike Yang and Bolai Cao, silver medalists of the 2012 Junior and Young Artists Piano Competitions, perform music of Brahms, Schubert, Ginastera, Schumann and Ravel.

Thursday, June 27 • Ryota Yamazaki and Leonardo Colafelice, gold medalists of the 2012 Junior and Young Artists Piano Competitions, offer a program that includes music of Chopin, Rachmaninoff, AlbĂ©niz and Stravinsky.

Friday, June 28 • Vassily Primakov, 2002 Bachauer silver medalist and famed Chopin specialist, performs an all-Chopin concert.

Saturday, June 29 • Natalia Lavrova and Vassily Primakov return as a powerhouse piano duo with music of Brahms, Liszt, Arensky and Rachmaninoff.

In addition to the performances, free master classes will be held each day from 10 a.m. to noon. They are presented in collaboration with the University of Utah School of Music at Gardner Hall. Presenters include Bernadene Blaha, Wednesday, June 26; Susan Duehlmeier, Thursday, June 27; Vassily Primakov, Friday, June 28; and new Bachauer boss Douglas Humpherys, Saturday, June 29. —

Piano festival

The 2013 Gina Bachauer International Piano Festival gets under way this week.

Where • Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, 138 W. 300 South, Salt Lake City

Tickets • $20; students $8; $60 for a festival package that includes all four concerts. Student package $25.
