Convicted Utah sex offender faces new rape allegations

A Sandy man convicted more than a decade ago of drugging and sexually assaulting his housekeeper, has been arrested for allegedly committing a similar crime with another woman.

Michael Anthony Kooyman on Thursday remained at the Salt Lake County jail, where he was being held on suspicion of aggravated sexual assault.

Kooyman, 39, allegedly raped a woman at his home after they spent Sunday afternoon drinking together.

The woman told police she believes Kooyman put some type of drug in her drink while they were at a bar, according to a probable cause statement filed with the jail.

The woman told police she began to feel "groggy and out of it" at the bar and asked Kooyman to drive her home. Instead, he took her to his Sandy home, where she fell asleep on a bed.

The woman told police she awoke to find Kooyman raping her.

When the woman told Kooyman to stop, he laughed and continued to sexually assault her, the jail statement said.

Afterward, Kooyman fell asleep and the woman left the home and contacted a friend to come and get her.

An examination at a hospital revealed injuries to the woman's genitals, which a certified sexual assault nurse called the most severe she had seen, according to the jail statement.

Police later served a search warrant at Kooyman's home and found a clear liquid in his refrigerator believed to be the so-called date rape drug GHB.

In 2002, Kooyman was convicted by a 3rd District Court jury of second-degree felony forcible sexual abuse in connection with his housekeeper.

The victim testified at Kooyman's trial that she cleaned Kooyman's Salt Lake County home, then stayed to have drinks with Kooyman and one of his friends.

She said she awoke hours later at her own home, dressed in Kooyman's clothes and with a stinging sensation in her genital area.

Kooyman admitted having sexual contact with the woman, but claimed it was consensual.

He was sentenced to a year in jail, and his name was added to Utah's sex offender registry.

In December, Kooyman was charged with a third-degree felony for allegedly failing to provide the sex offender registry with current information about his address and employment. No trial date has been set in that case.
