Error crashes Utah driver license computers

A database error caused the computer system for the state's drivers license records to crash Tuesday.
Driver License Division offices throughout the state were "pretty much out of business" starting about 10 a.m. Tuesday, said Dwayne Baird spokesman for the Utah Department of Public Safety.
Clerks were unable to process license applications and renewals, but a backup system allowed law enforcement officers to access records on "a limited basis," Baird said.
The crash occurred because of a code-reading error involving a daily transfer of motor vehicle records from the state Tax Commission to a DPS database.
"There was no corruption, no hacking," Baird said.
The computer system was repaired Tuesday night.
