TRACK AND FIELD • Tyson Gay overcame a slow start to win the 100 meters on Friday night in Des Moines, Iowa, at the U.S. championships, surging past Justin Gatlin halfway through the race.

Gay finished in a time of 9.75 seconds, the fastest in the world this season. Gatlin finished second, and Charles Silmon was third.

Oregon star and NCAA champion English Gardner, who just recently turned pro, captured the women's 100, breezing past the field. Octavious Freeman was second and Alexandria Anderson took third.

Federer, Nadal could meet early

TENNIS • Seven-time champion Roger Federer could face Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon — their earliest meeting in any Grand Slam. The draw Friday for the grass-court Grand Slam placed the third-seeded Federer and No. 5 Nadal in the same half. Federer is the defending champion at the All England Club, while Nadal is a two-time winner. Home favorite Andy Murray, seeded No. 2, could meet Nadal or Federer in a semifinal.
