Auto racing • James Hinchcliffe cruised to victory in the IndyCar Series race in Newton, Iowa, leading all but 24 of 250 laps Sunday. He became the first three-time winner this season and gave Andretti Autosport its fourth consecutive victory at Iowa's 0.875-mile oval, the shortest track on the circuit.
Ryan Hunter-Reay, Hinchcliffe's teammate, battled back from last place to finish second. He was followed by Tony Kanaan, Ed Carpenter and Graham Rahal.
• Audi won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France for the fourth straight year and dedicated its victory to Allan Simonsen of Denmark the first driver to die in the showcase endurance race since 1997.
Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish and Loic Duval of Audi No. 2 finished one lap ahead of Toyota No. 8 driven by Anthony Davidson, Sebastien Buemi and Stephane Sarrazin.
The 34-year-old Simonsen skidded into the barrier at the Tertre Rouge corner, where cars typically reach speeds of up to 105 mph, only 10 minutes into the race. He died at the hospital soon after arrival, organizers said.
Spain, Uruguay reach Confed semis
SOCCER • World Cup champion Spain defeated Nigeria 3-0 with two goals from Jordi Alba and another from Fernando Torres on Sunday in Fortaleza, Brazil, setting up a semifinal showdown with Italy in the Confederations Cup.
In Sunday's other match, Uruguay defeated Tahiti 8-0 in Recife, Brazil, and will play the Brazilians in the semifinals Wednesday.
Gay wins 200 to complete double
Track and field • Tyson Gay completed the 100-200 sprint double at U.S. track championships, winning the 200 meters in 19.74 seconds Sunday and holding off Isiah Young. Gay beat Justin Gatlin in the 100 on Friday in a season-leading time of 9.75.
Kimberlyn Duncan upset Olympic champion Allyson Felix in the women's 200. Duncan finished in 21.80, with Felix 0.05 seconds behind.
