Winds cause damage, power outages

Wind gusts of more than 40 and 50 mph were reported around the state on Monday afternoon, with the strongest winds reported to be 60 mph at Upper Cedar Mountain in the West Desert.
Wind damage was the likely culprit in a power outage that affected 8,000 customers in northeast Salt Lake City for about two hours starting at 5 p.m., said David Eskelsen, spokesman for Rocky Mountain Power.
Dry thunderstorms with microburst winds and lightning ramped up fire danger statewide, with a long hot spell expected for the rest of the week, the National Weather Service reported. Temperatures are expected to reach 100 degrees at many places in the valleys and near 110 degrees in southern Utah by the weekend.
