A South Salt Lake man is suspected of trying to snatch a child and threatening to kill the child's father.

According to jail documents, the man, 45, was trying to play with some children Monday evening at his apartment complex, near 3700 South and 300 East. Parents of the children told the man to stop playing, and the man went down the street, police wrote.

He started talking to a group of kids again and then "grabbed the hand of one of them over a 3-foot chain link fence," police wrote.

The man told the other children that "if they said anything, he would take them as well," police wrote.

The father of one of the children came outside, and the suspect threatened to kill him, investigators wrote.

The man was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of child kidnapping, simple assault and threats against life or property.
