A stretch of road in the upper reaches of Mill Creek Canyon will be closed to pedestrians Friday as crews remove a decrepit concrete bridge as part of a stream restoration project.
The old bridge is just below Elbow Fork, 1.3 miles above the closed gate, which officials plan to open Monday.
But before the upper canyon is opened to motor traffic for the summer, the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest intends to wrap up construction projects that impede the road up the popular canyon east of Salt Lake City.
A crane will be in the canyon Friday hauling out the unused bridge that needs to come out to improve fish habitat.
The Forest Service plans to strip the creek of its fish soon and replace them with native cutthroat trout.
Mountain bikers and hikers on Friday can still access the upper canyon via the Pipeline and Terraces trails.
