The discovery of E. coli bacteria in the Lindon city water supply prompted an emergency boil order Friday afternoon.

Lindon Police Chief Cody Cullimore said the bacteria, usually associated with human or animal feces, has the potential for causing diarrhea, cramps, nausea and headaches. For young children, the elderly or people with compromised immune systems, it can lead to serious illness or death. The order remained in place Friday night.

While the cause of the contamination was under investigation, Lindon Public Works crews acted immediately Friday to disinfect and flush the water distribution system.

Until officials give the all clear, Cullimore said Lindon residents should boil their water before using it for drinking or cooking, or in the alternative use bottled water.
