Indianapolis • Missy Franklin won the 100-meter backstroke Friday at the U.S. national championships, and 16-year-old Katie Ledecky moved into position to chase one of the toughest feats in swimming. Franklin finished in 58.67 seconds, setting a U.S. Open and long-course championship record. Elizabeth Pelton was second in 59.27.
Ledecky won for the second time this week. She finished the 400 freestyle in a personal best of 4:04.05, easily defeating Chloe Sutton second in 4:06.64. If Ledecky wins the 1,500 free Saturday, she could swim in the 200, 400, 800 and 1,500 at next month's world championships in Barcelona.
