Former Sen. Bob Bennett's commentary on the long-term debilitating effect of tea-party influence within the Republican Party, as reported in Paul Rolly's "Former Sen. Bennett says tea party spells doom for GOP" (Tribune, July 1), was revealing and thought-provoking. At the heart of it was Bennett's statement that "We're a center-right nation."

Bennett is a decent human being, and he was a good senator who was flexible in determining what action was best for the public good. Sadly, that is why he was discarded by those in control at the 2010 Republican State Convention.
