Restaurants are being picked on by the Utah Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission, which has 19 liquor cops aggressively patrolling pizza joints and mom-and-pop eateries so they can fine them from $500 to $3,000 ("Utah eateries and guests, get ready for more liquor stings" (Tribune, June 27).
Do we need the revenue from the fines so badly that we stoop to this? What are our legislators thinking? Requiring Zion curtains was dumb, but this? People go to these establishments to eat and socialize, not to get drunk.
We should have only four liquor cops for the whole state and 15 more highway patrol officers. They would more than pay for themselves by arresting drunken drivers and issuing speeding tickets.
