Re "Texas lawmakers reconvene for new abortion fight" (Tribune, July 2):

The recent filibuster of an anti-abortion bill in the Texas Legislature highlighted one part of the campaign to forbid abortions. The bill would close almost all Texas abortion clinics by placing upon them requirements they could not possibly meet, "to protect … women's health."

The claim that these restrictions are to protect the lives of the mothers is straightforward lying. The supporters certainly know that the risk to the health of the woman in an ordinary abortion clinic, even without the impossible medical requirements in the bill, is much less than her health risk of carrying the fetus to term.

Is it too much to ask abortion opponents to tell the truth?
