Hurricane • A retired U.S. Air Force major is in a hospital after his single-passenger plane crashed Wednesday near the Hurricane Municipal Airport.
The Spectrum of St. George reports that 74-year-old John Spey was identified as the pilot by Dixie Regional Medical Center.
Hurricane Police Chief Lynn Excell says the pilot appeared to have lost altitude at 4:44 p.m. Wednesday while trying to take off at a local airport. The plane ended up in Frog Hollow Wash.
Spey's condition was listed as serious, and hospital spokesman Terri Draper says he's expected to be transferred to another medical center.
It wasn't clear what injuries the Washington County resident suffered.
