Re: "Porch it, please," (Forum, July 5):
J. Kevin Bischoff need never suffer with a wet newspaper again. Customers can and should call MediaOne and have a dry one delivered to replace a wet one. The carrier will be penalized on his/her paycheck every time a complaint is made. Customers may also request that their paper be porched daily.
Things have changed in recent years. Adults now are newspaper carriers. I happen to be a 57-year-old grandmother doing this to make ends meet because of the recession. Gas costs have risen and we are not reimbursed for mileage. Every time I stop my car to get out and porch a paper I'm getting 0 mpg.
This past winter was very snowy, as Bischoff indicated. I got stuck in the snow and fell on the ice several times while delivering papers to porches. This spring and summer I have had to run through the sprinklers in the chilly morning air to porch papers when there is no other path to the porch. A couple of weeks ago I was bitten by a dog while porching a paper.
Porching newspapers is not as easy as Bischoff makes it sound.
