Mom, two others accused in girl's kidnapping

Three people were charged in the kidnapping of a girl who was picked up from a Granite School District summer camp by her noncustodial mother and taken to Wyoming.

The girl, 8, was attending camp at the Mill Hollow Campground in Wasatch County on July 2 when her biological mother, 31, arrived to pick her up, police wrote in charges filed Monday. The woman told staff that a district administrator was supposed to notify them that she was picking up the girl and provided identification. When the girl saw the woman and addressed her as "Mom," the staff let the girl go.

However, the mother had voluntarily terminated custody of the girl in 2009; since then, the girl was in the custody of her grandparents. The grandparents called police when they learned the child's mother had taken her away from the camp.

When police called the woman on her cell phone, the woman said her roommate had taken her to the camp to pick up her daughter, investigators wrote. She said had no intention of returning the child to her grandparents and confirmed her address in Wyoming, where she lives with the driver and a man who is a registered sex offender, police wrote.

Wyoming law enforcement officers arrested the woman and her two roommates on July 5 and returned the girl to her grandparents.

The mother and the roommates were charged with first-degree felony kidnapping and second-degree felony custodial interference.
