Author Orson Scott Card is throwing in the towel in the fight against same-sex marriage – just as his outspoken opinions against it are threatening to hurt him financially.

A boycott is being launched against the movie version of Card's science-fiction adventure "Ender's Game," due in theaters in November. The boycott's organizers, the gay sci-fi fan group Geeks Out, quote Card's comments about homosexuality and ask "Do you really want to give this guy your money?"

Card, a devout Mormon and a Brigham Young University alum, issued a statement to Entertainment Weekly (published online Monday night) in which he calls the same-sex marriage debate "moot":

"With the recent Supreme Court ruling, the gay marriage issue becomes moot. The Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution will, sooner or later, give legal force in every state to any marriage contract recognized by any other state."

But in retreat, Card couldn't resist playing the victim: "Now it will be interesting to see whether the victorious proponents of gay marriage will show tolerance toward those who disagreed with them when the issue was still in dispute."
