Burglaries from cars and homes in Salt Lake City have gone up with the temperature, with some neighborhoods seeing a dramatic rise.
According to Salt Lake City Police, neighborhoods throughout the city from Glendale to Sugar House to the University burglaries from either cars, homes or both have seen a spike in June. The police department's Community Intelligence Unit evaluated a two week period between June 16 and June 29, compared to June 9 through June 20.
The types of crimes vary from neighborhood to neighborhood. For example, in Rose Park, construction workers have seen a rise in their tools being stolen from work sites, while Glendale's number of stolen vehicles has leapt from one case in early June to nine at the end of the month. Police also recovered 18 stolen vehicles from Glendale in the latter period. Home burglaries also went up in the Capitol Hill and Downtown/East Central areas. Many of the home burglaries occurred during the day.
In the foothills, car burglaries have gone up dramatically, especially at Hogle Zoo, Foothill Village and the area between 1300 South and 1700 South.
Simply locking your car or house can go a long way. Police say that burglars often prowl neighborhoods at night and check all windows and doors until they find one that's unlocked. People also should be aware of strangers looking into windows, either during the day or night, and report them to police. Take notes on their appearance and behavior and report it, the department urged. In an emergency or during a crime in progress, call 911. Otherwise, people can call the department at 801-799-3000 or send a text, including photos, to 274637 with the keyword TIPSLCPD.
