Real Salt Lake has waived seldom-used midfielder David Viana.

The 21-year-old Portuguese attacker came to RSL in September 2012, but never found a regular spot in coach Jason Kreis' rotation. Viana made just two MLS appearances for the team, both coming in October of last year.

Viana has experience playing for his country's youth teams. He played for RC Strasbourg's youth side and spent a year with Atletico Madrid C, the La Liga club's second reserve team, before joining RSL on a free transfer.

Viana was waived prior to the July 1 cutoff, meaning his contract was not fully guaranteed. His departure also frees up a roster spot only a few days after the summer transfer window opened.

Lalo on loan

Backup goalkeeper Lalo Fernandez has been loaned out to the Phoenix FC Wolves, of USL Pro, for one match. Fernandez was scheduled to start Thursday night.

Up and running

After undergoing shoulder surgery in May, rookie midfielder John Stertzer is making progress in his rehabilitation efforts. "First run in over 6 weeks completed," the Maryland product tweeted Thursday. "Couldn't be more happy."

Stertzer, the 12th overall pick in the 2013 draft, dislocated his right shoulder in a May 20 reserve match against Chivas USA.
