Lightning suspected in 2-alarm Salt Lake City pit fire

Salt Lake City firefighters had to remain on the scene of a still-smoldering, two-alarm mulch pit blaze overnight, but were declared the blaze's lingering hot spots extinguished by late Tuesday morning.
Once hot spots inside the municipal green waste storage site at 1790 W. Indiana Ave. (about 850 South) were completely doused by 8 a.m., investigators were able to begin work to determine the official cause.
However, SLCFD spokesman Jasen Asay said the fire, first reported about 10:30 p.m. Monday, may have been sparked by lightning. A thunderstorm did roll through the area about the same time the 200-by-300-foot mulch pit ignited.
No injuries were reported and no structures were lost or damaged.
