A rock climber remained in critical condition Wednesday, the day after she fell more than 50 feet while attempting to climb a rain-soaked cliffside in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said the 25-year-old woman, whose identity was not released, was rappelling down Storm Mountain near the mouth of the canyon when she lost her footing about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

She was climbing with a friend at the time when she fell, landing first on a pile of loose rocks and debris before rolling another 20 feet. She sustained severe head and facial injuries.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Intermountain Medical Center.
