For most of my life I never considered myself Democrat or Republican. I voted for the person who held the same views. I never considered myself either conservative or liberal. Unfortunately, over the years I have been pushed into these categories because of my belief in a number of things.
1. I believe that we have an obligation to provide for those who can't provide for themselves. That doesn't mean we shouldn't get rid of waste and abuse, but there are many people who simply cannot provide for themselves and a civilized society does that for its most vulnerable citizens.
2. I want to breathe clean air and drink clean water and whether I believe in global warming or not doesn't matter. What matters is that we understand that we cannot continue to abuse our planet and use up all its resources, just because we can and just because we think we have the right to maintain our standard of living.
3. I want affordable health care and not have to worry about being dropped from my insurance plan because I get cancer. Whether you like the Affordable Care Act doesn't matter. What matters is that our health care system was broken and needed to be fixed, and no one was willing to do that.
It seems that these basic beliefs have turned me into a liberal Democrat. Go figure.
