Ivan Rodriguez inducted into Rangers' HOF

Ivan Rodriguez is finally accepting retirement almost two years after playing his final game. Now the 14-time All-Star catcher has what certainly won't be his last Hall of Fame honor.

Rodriguez was inducted Saturday night into the Hall of Fame for the Texas Rangers, the team for which the catcher affectionately known as "Pudge" played for the first 12 of his 21 major league seasons. He made his debut at age 19 in June 1991, and also returned to the Rangers for the end of the 2009 season.

Rodriguez played for five other teams in his major league career, which he finished with Washington in 2010 and 2011. He also played for Florida, Detroit, the New York Yankees and Houston.

The pregame ceremony, was delayed nearly a half-hour by rain that gave way to sunshine, included the Rangers honoring the memory of former team owner Brad Corbett, who died last December.

Members of Corbett's family and Bobby Brown, the former American League and Rangers president, were in attendance.

Cards place Holliday on 15-day DL

The St. Louis Cardinals believe outfielder Matt Holliday needs a little more time to recover from a strained hamstring.

Holliday was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday, retroactive to July 12. The No. 3 hitter had already missed four games after getting hurt running to first on July 11 at Chicago.

Nats' Detwiler to miss at least 2 more starts

Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson announced Saturday that starting pitcher Ross Detwiler has not completed a full bullpen session and will need to miss at least two more starts while dealing with a lower-back strain.

Johnson said "nothing so far has worked" in the efforts to treat Detwiler's back. Detwiler has struggled since returning last month from a separate back injury, a right oblique strain that also had him on the DL.
