Flash flooding prompted the federal Bureau of Land Management on Tuesday to close southwestern Utah's popular Red Cliffs Recreation Area campground.

BLM spokeswoman Sheryl Foot said the damage was the result of weekend thunderstorms that triggered flooding and heavy debris flow along Quail and Leeds creeks, which meander through the recreation area. Extensive damage resulted to an access road and other facilities as large boulders, tree trunks and mud tumbled through the site.

Foot said that the campground, day-use areas and pedestrian access to the eastern section of the Prospector Trail will remain closed while repairs are completed.

The public will be notified as soon as the area is re-opened for use.
