Macy's at City Creek Center in downtown Salt Lake City is inviting artists to submit a proposal to decorate its candy window display.
Last year Macy's brought back the traditional holiday candy windows made popular by the now demolished ZCMI department store. The old ZCMI store was located where Macy's now sits at 21 S. Main St.
This year, six artists will be chosen to create an oversized holiday ornament made entirely out of candy, for display in the store's Main Street windows. Artists will be responsible for creation and installation.
Macy's in turn, will fund supplies necessary and promote the artists' biographies and websites as part of the window exhibition, company officials said.
Each artist will have a 42" round Styrofoam ball on which they may create the holiday theme display. The ball will hang and rotate at approximately 30 inches from the ground.
Artists are asked to submit a rendering and a short explanation of their window idea. The window displays are 9 feet wide, 8 feet deep and 12 feet high. Feasibility whether the project can be done within the time, space and budget limits will be considered.
ZCMI started the candy windows tradition in 1972, and the unveiling every November (on the Friday after Thanksgiving) usually accompanied the switching-on of the lights at Temple Square as a downtown event.
Any artists interested should contact Chad Young, visual manager of the Macy's City Creek, at Chad.young@macys.com.
