Kidnapping stretches Park City to Salt Lake City, police say

A Salt Lake City kidnapping led to a two-county police chase and a car crash.

About 4:30 p.m., Summit County Sheriff's deputies received word that a woman had escaped a vehicle that was traveling near 2600 W. Kilby Road in Park City. She then asked bystanders for help, said Salt Lake City police Lt. Josh Scharman.

The victim told deputies that a man and woman at a McDonald's at 500 S. 200 West in Salt Lake City forced her to get into a vehicle Wednesday afternoon, Scharman said. The woman had suffered minor injuries and said she had been assaulted, Scharman said. Deputies called out the description of the vehicle.

A Utah Highway Patrol trooper saw the vehicle traveling west on Interstate 80 down Parleys Canyon, according to a UHP press statement. The trooper tried to pull the car over, but it fled, leading the trooper on a high-speed chase onto Interstate 215 south and then 3300 South, where the car caused a collision among three cars.

The suspects continued driving to 2300 East and Apple View Court (about 2900 South), where the car hit a fence. The woman was taken to a hospital for injuries she suffered in the crash. The man fled on foot. Officers searched for him with police dogs for about 20 minutes before he was found and taken into custody.

Detectives were interviewing the two suspects and the victim Wednesday night. Scharman said officers were trying to determine the victim's relationship to the two suspects, the nature of the assault against her, and how she freed herself.
