Antique car overturns near Zion National Park; 3 hurt, 1 dead

An antique automobile crashed Friday morning near Zion National Park, killing one person and injuring three others.

The 10:20 a.m. crash on State Road 9 near mile post 52 — about 5 miles west of Mount Carmel Junction — occurred when the driver of the 1915 Ford Model T pulled over to allow other traffic to pass. When the car's wooden-spoked right front wheel went off the pavement, the wheel came apart and the vehicle overturned. All four occupants, who were visiting from Minnesota, were ejected. UHP noted that the shoulder where the car rolled was not very steep.

A 51-year-old woman was taken by helicopter to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George in critical condition. The woman died of her injuries. The other three occupants suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken by ambulance to Kane County Hospital in Kanab.

The victim's husband was elsewhere in a different Model T. They were part of a Model T club that had traveled to Utah, bringing the antique cars with them on trailers.
