Rain helps crews fight southern Utah wildfires

Rain in southern Utah helped crews make advances on two wildfires in the region, including one that was totally contained Saturday night.

The Cinder Pit Fire was 100 percent contained Saturday night after burning 439 acres in Washington County between Veyo and Brookside, according to fire spokeswoman Vicki Tyler. The fire began Thursday afternoon with a lightning strike and was about 80 percent contained Saturday morning.

About 140 people, as well as a helicopter and four air tankers, were on scene fighting the blaze.

Also in Washington County, the Rush Lake Fire had burned about 250 acres 25 miles northwest of Cedar City Saturday morning. The size of the fire was unchanged from the day before.

Lightning sparked the fire Friday afternoon. It was not contained Saturday, but Tyler reported that "very little fire activity will enable crews to quickly contain this fire."
