NFL notes: Ravens TE Dennis Pitta may miss the season

Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta dislocated his hip in practice Saturday and will be sidelined indefinitely with what coach John Harbaugh called "a serious injury."

Pitta, a former BYU star, was carted off the field after colliding with safety James Ihedigbo in the back of the end zone vying for a pass from Joe Flacco. The receiver lay prone for several minutes before the cart arrived.

The Ravens begin defense of their Super Bowl title on Sept. 5 in Denver. Pitta will at least miss that game, Harbaugh said, but the severity of the injury could keep the tight end out for much longer than that.

The Ravens retweeted a story by ESPN in which a league source said Pitta would miss the entire season.

Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome did not immediately answer a text message from The Associated Press seeking information on Pitta's status.

After practice, a somber Harbaugh said, "Dennis has a dislocated hip. We'll have to take a look at that and see exactly what it is. It's a serious injury. He is going to be out for a while. He will not be in the Denver game and we'll just have to play it from there to see how long it goes."

Pitta was preparing for his fourth season with Baltimore. The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder caught 61 passes for 669 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

Eagles WR Maclin tears ACL

Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin tore the ACL in his right knee during practice Saturday and could miss the season.

Maclin went down at the end of a non-contact drill and appeared to be in pain while he was on the ground for several minutes. He was helped onto the cart and needed assistance getting off it and going into the team's practice facility.

"Appreciate all the love and support twitter fam....sad day but I have setbacks my entire life. Minor setback for a MAJOR comeback! #birdgang," he wrote on Twitter.

Maclin is headed into his fifth season with the Eagles. He led the team with 69 catches for 857 yards and seven touchdowns last season, and the former first-round pick is in the final year of his rookie contract.

Jets • General manager John Idzik says the final call on the team's starting quarterback will be a "collective effort." With Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith competing for the quarterback job, Idzik says not one person in the organization will have veto power over any decision — including coach Rex Ryan.

Texans • Running back Arian Foster is still recovering from a right calf strain, but said Saturday that he feels good and shouldn't be out of camp much longer. Foster rushed for 1,424 yards and 15 touchdowns last year.

Browns • Offensive tackle Ryan Miller sustained a concussion during a blocking drill in practice Saturday, an injury that shook his teammates. Miller was carted from the field and taken by ambulance to the Cleveland Clinic after he was hurt during one-on-one drills.
