Cache County canal oil-free, irrigation use..

Hazardous materials workers and Bear River Health Department officials on Monday cleared the resumption of irrigation water use from a Cache County canal contaminated by oil over the weekend.

Bear River Health Department spokeswoman Jill Parker said tests had confirmed the water in the Lower Hyde Park irrigation canal, which serves the North Logan and Hyde Park area, was oil-free. As of noon Monday, farmers and residents along the canal were allowed to resume use of the canal.

Cleanup in a field where the canal's flow was temporarily diverted Saturday night will continue for the next day or two, but officials did not believe any lasting environmental damage had been done.

Heavy rainfall Saturday was blamed for the incident in which an unknown amount of oil from a road construction project on 1800 North in North Logan washed into the canal.

While health officials believed any crisis had passed by Monday, the department set up a hotline telephone number (435-792-6576) for citizens to report any concerns.
