Truck crashes into Sandy home

More than a dozen people were displaced from their apartments Friday in Sandy after a pickup truck crashed into their building.

A man was driving the pickup west on Pioneer Avenue (8530 South) about 7:50 a.m. when a woman driving a white Oldsmobile Cutlass pulled out in front of him from 300 East, said Sandy police Sgt. Jon Arnold.

The man swerved to avoid hitting the Cutlass but instead crashed into the house on the southwest corner of the intersection, Arnold said.

The house was divided into four apartments; the truck crashed into the front door of the north unit, Arnold said. The occupant was at work and no residents were injured. However the driver of the pickup suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital "as a precaution," Arnold said.

The entire building was evacuated while crews checked the building for damages to its gas and electric systems, Arnold said. The building may have sustained structural damage as well, which could drive the cost of the damage up to several hundred thousand dollars, Arnold said. A building inspector was reviewing the apartments' structural integrity. The Red Cross was called to assist displaced residents.

The woman who pulled out in front of the pickup did not stop. Witnesses said she did not appear to be aware that she cut off the truck or that the truck crashed, Arnold said.
