The Utah Highway Patrol says the best statistic from its recent Interstate 80 Challenge patrol surge was the one with the lowest number: zero fatalities.

Troopers who flooded the freeway from its Utah stretch from the Wyoming to Nevada borders responded to 27 total crashes during the July 24-31 period, during which UHP personnel put in 1,950 total hours on patrol.

UHP reports its troopers made 18 arrests, all but one for drug- or alcohol-related violations.

A total of 772 citations were issued for speeding and other traffic violations, along with 789 warnings. Seven commercial vehicles were cited for safety violations, and 21 more were given warnings.
