The Utah Division of Consumer Protection has reached a settlement with a Michigan company requiring it to pay a $5,000 fine for sending deceptive notes to Utah companies seeking fees to comply with business registration requirements.
The letters from Corporate Records Service, also called The Mandatory Poster Agency, directed Utah companies to send in $125 along with a list of company directors and other information to satisfy a Utah law pertaining to annual reports. It falsely portrayed itself as a Utah company, the division said.
The company also agreed to refund consumers who sent it money.
This is the third time the company has been cited by Utah regulators. It was cited for trying to dupe businesses into buying workplace safety posters and paid $40,000 in fines.
