A Saturday afternoon crash in Kane County killed a lone motorcycle rider on U.S. Highway 89, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

A UHP statement reports that a 70-year-old California man was killed after failing to negotiate a curve north of Kanab, causing the 2009 Harley Davidson to go off the right side of road and roll over. The man's name was not immediately released.

Troopers estimated the crash happened at around 4 p.m. However, no one witnessed it. A passing motorist found the crashed motorcycle and reported it to authorities a short time later.

Investigators found a helmet in the debris, but since the chin strap was tightened, UHP officials said it was impossible for the man to have been wearing it at the time of the crash. UHP believes speed was a factor in the crash.
