As Utah's cities and rural fossil fuel extraction areas continue to embellish their reputation for having some of the worst, if not the worst, air quality in the U.S., isn't it nice to know that we have folks like Rep. Chris Stewart doing whatever he can in Congress to reverse this trend? And, as he leads a subcommittee charged with oversight of the EPA, it would seem he's perfectly positioned to champion the number one environmental concern of his constituents, air quality.

To the contrary, he's working to slash the EPA's budget and taking steps to block creation of any "new costly regulations" that might cause big polluters to spend money reining in coal-fired power plants and ozone ("GOP threatens to subpoena EPA over pollution studies," Tribune, July 22).

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, our global warming denial state politicians and the Division of Air Quality are doing their part to build $600 million highways, extract and burn fossil fuels and permit polluters to expand. The solution is simple and it's not asking ratepayers to pay for expansion of natural gas fueling stations, UCAIR or the "Governor's Clean Air Challenge."

Elect candidates who support smart growth and public health.
