Provo • Brigham Young football coaches don't have a lot of scholarships left to hand out to members of the class of 2014, but on Thursday they were happy to dole out one of their few remaining spots.

That's because they landed one of the top linebackers in California.

Tyler Cook, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound linebacker from Vista Murrieta High School in Murrieta, Calif., committed to BYU, lifting the total number of BYU commits for 2014 to 11.

Cook had decided on BYU for quite some time, but waited until Thursday because Aug. 8 is his parents' anniversary. Both are BYU graduates.

The recruiting service Scout.com lists Cook as a three-star athlete who reportedly has clocked a time of 4.51 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

He also had offers from Kansas State, Arizona, Miami, Boise State, Washington State and others.

Cook has reportedly not decided yet whether he will go on an LDS Church mission before enrolling at BYU.

Seven of BYU's commitments for 2014 are from defensive players, including highly touted linebacker Fred Warner of San Marcos, Calif. Warner and Cook are good friends.
