The National Park Service confirmed a Salt Lake City man drowned following a boating accident on Lake Powell.

About 8 p.m. Wednesday, the 23-year-old man was thrown from the bow of a boat when it hit a shallow submerged island or rock in a remote area of Lake Powell, near the Dangling Rope marina, according to a news release. He was then hit by the boat, the release adds.

The victim's name was still being withheld Thursday, said Denise Shultz, spokeswoman for the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

"This is a terrible tragedy affecting family, friends and the entire boating community," the release states. "But this is also a time to remind those enjoying Utah's many lakes and reservoirs that with low water conditions, extra caution should be exercised when operating boats on the water and to remember that utilizing the basic navigational rules of proper lookout, safe speed, and safe distance will help avoid a collision with another vessel, a person in the water, or potential water hazards."

The Salt Lake Tribune will report additional details as they become available.
