Investigators want to find out who shot and killed a Riverton woman's dog last week.

The woman arrived at her house on the 3600 West block of 125th South Thursday night to find her Shetland sheepdog had died. She called the police the next morning, said Unified Police Detective Jared Richardson.

A veterinarian did an X-ray and autopsy on the dog and found that a BB pellet had punctured one of its lungs, killing it. The veterinarian also found other BBs in the dog that were several weeks old, Richardson said.

"The dog had been targeted before and abused for some time, at least for a couple weeks," Richardson said.

Salt Lake County Animal Services and the police are working together the find out who is responsible, Richardson added.
