Re "House bill offers to ease Utah's tech pro shortage," Opinion, Aug. 11
Daryl Acumen (a senior manager for Hewlett Packard and vice-chair of Utah County Republican Party) does an excellent job of convincing myself and the public to support immigration reform, in part through the passage of the SKILLS Visa Act. He claims "growth, profits and job creation are stymied by archaic immigration laws" and this bill "will ease America's critical shortage of professionals with degrees in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields and computer science by raising the laughable low cap on work visas for immigrants."
With this I agree, despite Daryl's obvious hypocritical position in Utah's county Republican Party. The sole reason this act and other immigration reform legislation is dying on the vine within the corridors of our legislative grottoes is the total disregard by the "tea-party" type Republicans in the House who would rather die and go down with the ship than do anything which might improve President Obama's standing with the American public.
As vice-chair of this party in Utah County, Mr. Acumen could do more than write letters to the local paper!
