Jordan's Shaver to miss most of senior football season

Jordan defensive lineman Colton Shaver will miss most, if not all, of his senior season after doctors found a blood clot in a vein over the weekend.

Shaver began to notice swelling in his arm after a weight training session last week, and the swelling became worse, prompting the Jordan medical staff to admit him to a hospital Saturday, his parents said.

Doctors found a vein that ran between his collarbone and first rib had become compressed due to "constant over the head activities." After the clot had been dissolved, a surgeon removed part of the rib to prevent more compression and future problems.

Shaver's recovery time will be between six and eight weeks, and his family hopes to see him return to play near the end of the season.

Shaver was a key piece in the Beetdiggers' state championship defense last season. Shaver, also an all-state catcher with an offer to play baseball at Washington State, is not expected to have any long-term complications.

"We look forward to a fast recovery so that Colton can get back to doing the things he loves to do," his parents, Greg and Shelby Shaver, wrote in an email to The Tribune. "He is bummed that it is his senior year that he will miss, but there is never the perfect time for injuries to occur. At least he will have plenty of rest and recovery time before he needs to begin throwing baseballs."
